170,000 Impacted by Data Breach at Chord Specialty Dental Partners

An email security incident at Chord Specialty Dental Partners has resulted in a data breach affecting more than 170,000 people.

Chord Specialty Dental Partners (CDHA Management and Spark DSO) is a Tennessee-based dental service organization that supports over 60 practices across six US states.

The organization revealed in a data security incident notification posted on its website earlier this month that it had discovered suspicious activity on an employee’s email account in September 2024.

An investigation revealed that someone had gained unauthorized access to several email accounts between August 18 and September 25, 2024.

The probe showed that the compromised email accounts stored personal information, including name, address, date of birth, SSN, driver’s license number, bank account information, payment card information, medical information, and health insurance information.

“At this time, Chord is not aware of any evidence to suggest that any information has been or will be fraudulently misused. However, we were unable to rule out the possibility that the information could have been accessed,” Chord said.

The dental organization told the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that the incident impacted more than 173,000 people. Chord said affected individuals are being offered credit monitoring and identity protection services.

This is not the only significant email-based data breach announced by a healthcare organization in recent days. An incident suffered by wheelchair provider Numotion affects nearly 500,000 individuals.
